The English name for the Finnish police training institution has changed. The former Police College is now the Police University College.
"The name change is related to the ongoing degree reform in police education. The former name, the Police College, refers to upper secondary education. In future, even basic studies in police education will be at the level of Finnish universities of applied sciences," Director Kimmo Himberg explains.
However, the name university of applied sciences, which is widely used in Finland, is not a suitable option for an institution that only offers education in one field. Other Nordic institutions that educate policemen have, for the most part, adopted the name "university college", and the Finnish police training institution wanted to follow this same practice.
