The Palestinian police seek development ideas from Finnish police training
A delegation from the Palestinian police is visiting the Police College of Finland in Tampere from 4 to 9 September. In the course of the week, the visitors will gain a thorough outlook into Finnish police training and its organisation. The aim of the visit is to support key persons in police training in Palestine in the introduction of the new police college in Jericho currently under construction and in the launch of the training.
"The majority of the Palestinian police have never received any training for their work. Civilian police in Palestine is at a stage where it is moving from 'tents to a modern training centre', and the transition requires new kind of competence from personnel," explains Chief Inspector Satu Koivu, expert in civilian crisis management who has only recently returned to Finland from Palestine.
"Police training in Finland is at a high level, and we are happy to present the training system of the police and the management and practices of the training institution. In addition, the Finns already had previous experience on the development of police training in Palestine from the EUPOL COPPS cooperation," says Kimmo Himberg, Director of Police College.
During their time in Finland, the visitors have learned about areas such as the planning of studies contained in a Diploma in Police Studies as well as the assessment of students, teaching methods and financial planning. The guests have also received demonstrations on different topics, including driving and use-of-force instruction.
