The Police University College has started a new research project, the results of which can be used to combat illegal waste shipments and illegal waste trade more effectively in Europe. The project's results can be used in strategic planning and cross-border regulatory work.

"We are analyzing illegal operating practices in waste trade and shipments to produce information on the threats and risks associated with waste shipments. We will also estimate the amount of illegal earnings made in the waste sector," says researcher Iina Sahramäki .

"We will also be taking a look at legislation, because law changes can help expose and prevent criminal activity better than before."

This EU-funded project also involves Tilburg University in the Netherlands and UCSC TRANS-CRIME research center in Italy.
